Alpaca tooth care

Updated: Jun 11, 2021

Alpaca suffer from tooth rot which can lead to an abscess in the jaw and if not treated early usually causes death. I found this out the hard way with two of my heard recently being euthanized by the vet.

It is important to regularly check your alpaca for this possible disease by feeling along the jawline for signs of any lumps which is a good way to catch this problem early. If any hard lumps are found then this must be referred to your vet urgently for any chance of saving them.

There is an alpaca dentist in Victoria and she makes house calls if required or you can transport them to her farm for checkups.

This is a photo of one of the girls that had a lump. It can just be seen to the right side of her jaw.
